4-6 Weeks Before The Move… |
| 1.1 |
Finalise the date of your move. You can move into your new home anytime after the sale has been closed. Your Solicitor will arrange a closing date for the sale to be completed. You should aim to move as soon as is practically possible after this date. |
| 1.2 |
If you need additional storage space for your belongings then this should be arranged at least 3-4 days before moving. |
| 1.3 |
Inform Landlords etc. regarding notice to vacate rented accommodation. Most leases require 4 weeks notice to be given before moving out of a rented property. If a longer notice period is required then ensure that this is accounted for. |
| 1.4 |
Inform your utility provider that you are moving house and that final arrangements need to be made with them to read meters. The main providers that you will need to inform will be
Electricity Supply Board @ 1850 337 777 (Meter Readings) or 01-6778855
Bord Gais @ 1850 456200 (Customer Accounts)
Eircom @ 1903 (Customer Accounts) or 1800 500 500
NTL (Cablelink) @ 1800 321 321
Also, don’t forget the paper delivery, the milkman, cleaners etc! |
| 1.5 |
Build up a list of companies that need to be informed of your move. Remember, Banks, Building Societies etc. will not accept email notification from you. |
| 1.6 |
Check your home insurance policy (you may not have one in rented accommodation) and ensure that your contents are covered from the day you move into your new home. Your MoveHome.ie financial consultant will be happy to take you through the finer details if you wish. |
| 1.7 |
Do a “spring clean” of the goods you definitely won’t be bringing with you to your new home and please remember the local charities. |
| 2 |
2-3 Weeks Before The Big Move… |
| 2.1 |
Purchase packing materials and boxes so that those non-essential items can be packed up safely straight away. Your local supermarket is a great place to get boxes for free! Also, use plenty of old newspapers for packing and other soft disposable materials. Don’t spend money on packing material unless it's absolutely necessary. |
| 2.2 |
Finalise the disconnection dates for the services and utilities. (see 1.4 above). |
| 2.3 |
Put the non-essential items into the garage so that they won’t be in the way the day of the move. |
| 2.4 |
Clearly mark all boxes with the contents and to whom they belong. This will make it easier to unpack everything after you move to your new home. |
| 3 |
1 Week Before The Big Move... |
| 3.1 |
Pay all final bills required. |
| 3.2 |
Begin to pack clothes, crockery, utensils etc. into individual boxes. (Just keep a small amount of these things out to last 6-7 days. Clearly mark all boxes. |
| 3.3 |
Keep a close eye on all post arriving and keep a note of any address change notifications that have been missed. Use your MoveHome.ie account to record the addresses of these people/companies that need to be informed of your move. |
| 3.4 |
All your family's important documentation e.g. Passports, Legal Documents, Licenses etc. should be packed into a separate box and transported personally by you to your new home. They are too valuable and difficult to replace if the moving company get it wrong! |
| 4 |
The Day Before The Big Move... |
| 4.1 |
Defrost the fridge and freezer |
| 4.2 |
Switch off all unnecessary breakers and switches. |
| 4.3 |
Hoover the house fully after all your belongings have been packed away. Ensure the house is left neat, tidy and clean. |
| 4.4 |
Ensure that all boxes are clearly marked especially those with fragile goods in them. |
| 4.5 |
Inform the Gardai that the house is now vacant. Also, tell your neighbours. |
| 5 |
The Day Of The Big Move... |
| 5.1 |
If you are using a professional moving company then let them do their job. Make sure however, that you double check the final inventory packed away before you leave. This is especially important if you are putting your possessions into storage for a few weeks or months before moving into your new home. |
| 5.2 |
Check every last room and drawer before leaving. |
| 5.3 |
Deposit the house keys with the Estate Agent or Solicitor with the sale of the house. If the house is rented, return the key to the lending agent or landlord. |
| 5.4 |
Ensure that final meter readings are taken. |
| 5.5 |
Switch off all final electrical switches (leave the alarm on). |
| 5.6 |
Close and lock all windows and doors. |
